Family-friendly zoo in Northumberland

The Northumberland Zoo in Morpeth, England, is a fascinating attraction that combines nature, wildlife, and family-friendly fun in a unique way. This family-run zoo is located in the idyllic Northumberland countryside and has grown from a small operation with just a few animals to a sprawling wildlife park that now covers over 17 hectares. As a non-profit organization, the zoo places a strong emphasis on conservation, education, and animal welfare, making it a popular destination for visitors from the region and beyond.

Interactive animal experiences for kids

The heart of the Northumberland Zoo is its impressive variety of animal species – over 100 different species ranging from tiny harvest mice to majestic snow leopards. The zoo is particularly proud of rare and endangered species like Livingstone's fruit bats, which are only found in a few zoos worldwide. Highlights also include playful lemurs, curious meerkats, and impressive birds of prey that are regularly featured in an exciting flight show at the "Wild Theatre." A special experience is the "Wallaby Walkabout," where visitors can walk through the wallaby enclosure and observe the animals up close – an experience that especially delights children.

Animal encounters at Northumberland Zoo

The zoo offers numerous interactive opportunities that make the experience unforgettable. Daily animal feedings and keeper talks provide insights into the lives of the residents and raise awareness about conservation and animal welfare. For those who want to get even closer to the animals, there are special encounters with raccoons or capybaras, where visitors can feed and pet the animals, accompanied by knowledgeable keepers who enthusiastically share their expertise. These activities are not only entertaining but also educational, fostering an understanding of the needs of the animal world.

Education and conservation in zoo

In addition to the animals, the Northumberland Zoo also offers attractions for young visitors. The "Bear Falls Soft Play" area is an indoor play paradise with a 4-meter-high slide, a toddler area, and hideaways, which is a highlight on rainy days. Outside, a large playground with climbing frames, swings, and tractors invites kids to let off steam, while numerous picnic areas – some with views of the enclosures – provide families with the opportunity to enjoy the day in a relaxed manner. The zoo is surrounded by nature, with paths leading through fields and trees, giving the feeling of being far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The atmosphere at the zoo is warm and welcoming, characterized by the passion of the owner's family and their team. The keepers are not only knowledgeable but also friendly and always available for questions, making the visit more personal. A small on-site café caters to the culinary needs: here, warm dishes like freshly prepared soups, sandwiches, and homemade cakes are served, which taste particularly good after a day outdoors. For those who prefer to bring their own food, the generous picnic areas, often equipped with seating, can be used.

The Northumberland Zoo places a high value on the welfare of its animals and is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The enclosures are spacious and naturalistic, with plenty of hiding places, so the animals are not forced to be constantly on display. The zoo participates in international conservation programs, such as for snow leopards, and actively advocates for the preservation of endangered species. Additionally, there are ongoing expansions and improvements – new enclosures and attractions are regularly in the works, keeping the visit exciting for return visitors as well.

The zoo has an excellent reputation for its good value for money and versatility. Families appreciate the combination of animal watching, play opportunities, and nature experiences, while nature lovers praise the diversity of species and the peaceful location. Criticism is rare, although some visitors may find the paths muddy in bad weather or notice that some areas are still under construction. Nevertheless, the enthusiasm outweighs any negatives: the Northumberland Zoo is a place that doesn't need oversized attractions to impress – its strength lies in authenticity, closeness to the animals, and the loving care that is noticeable in every detail.

A brilliant zoo! The animals are clearly well looked after with a big centre on welfare and conservation. Really knowledgeable staff and a great restaurant. The bat enclosure was amazing, as were the owls! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Not been here for 6 years, a Hugh improvement, snow leopards, massive inclosure for fruit bats, a lovely day out, all well looked after animals, we spent the whole day here, first in and last out. The animals we didn't see on our first walk around we saw the second time. Plenty of toilets on site and places to eat, we took a packed lunch.

Great zoo not too big lots to see. However cafe very expensive for what you get. Tuna mayo sandwich £5.00. Two slices of cheap white bread with tuna mayo. one slice of cucumber, tomatoe, and lettuce leaves on the side. That's it. Toastie £6.80. Rediculis.

Had an excellent day out here with our 5 and 1 year olds! Lots of animals to see and we did well because the wind was horrific and we still managed to see 90% of animals here! Our 5 year old also loved the tractor museum bit we double back to see that and the snow leopards again! The snow leopards were amazing and glad we double back when we did as they were close up to the glass so we got such a good view! Finished off with an hour in the soft play area to top off an excellent day out!

Plenty to do to fill the time, all the animals and staff seemed happy enough. A lovely day out and we have visited several times. But bring a packed lunch - the cafe sells small portions of the lowest possible quality after a long queue for too much money.
